The goal of this chapter is to provide clinicians with a practical primer about assessment and management of mental health problems in children and adolescents with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The focal areas of this topic are 1) principles of assessment; 2) the “typical” case or, alternatively, whether there is a “typical” case; 3) the determinants of mental health outcomes after pediatric TBI; 4) the importance of mild TBI (mTBI) in children and adolescents; 5) the effect of TBI on the developing brain; 6) treatment and management of TBI in children and adolescents; and 7) classic errors and useful assessment and management information.
