Chapter 11.Deepening Play Therapy
Sections
Excerpt
As treatment progresses, the therapist works through the medium of play to facilitate exploration of conflicts, defenses, and relational patterns that contribute to disruption of a child’s developmental progression. Their relationship deepens as the dyad continues to play on a regular basis, achieving greater narrative complexity and sharing new meanings as they enrich pretend scenarios and roles. While following the child’s lead, the clinician finds opportunities to expand storylines, clarify affects, and connect characters’ internal states to outward behaviors; these interventions are guided by the child’s play creations, by the therapist’s knowledge (of the child’s developmental needs and tendencies, personal history, current circumstances, and psychological dynamics), and by the dyad’s less conscious, emotional responses to the evolving play.
