Renée Binder, New APA President-Elect

Members of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) have elected Renée L. Binder, M.D., of San Francisco, president-elect of the association. Dr. Binder is professor and director of the Psychiatry and Law Program and associate dean for academic affairs at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. At APA, she is chair of the APA Committee on Advocacy and Litigation Funding and a former trustee-at-large and Area 6 representative. In the three-way race, in which APA members voted for their first and second choice, Dr. Binder won a majority of votes over James Nininger, M.D., of New York City and Mark Hyman Rapaport, M.D., of Atlanta.
In the race for APA treasurer, APA members elected Frank Brown, M.D., of Stone Mountain, Ga., over James Greene, M.D., of Memphis. For trustee-at-large, incumbent Anita Everett, M.D., of Glenwood, Maryland, outpolled Stephen McLeod-Bryant, M.D., of Old Hickory, Tennessee.
This year, two APA Areas elected trustees—Areas 2 and 5. The new Area 2 trustee is Vivian Bender, M.D., of New York City. In Area 5, the new trustee is R. Scott Benson, M.D., of Pensacola, Florida.
Dr. Binder will officially become president-elect on May 7 at the close of this year's APA annual meeting in New York City, at which time the current president-elect, Paul Summergrad, M.D., of Boston, will succeed Jeffrey Lieberman, M.D., as president.
