(Slightly over 17 years ago, in December 1953, at a symposium sponsored by the Association, with Dr. Emil A. Gutheil as chairman, Dr. Benjamin defined transsexualism and, for the first time, reported his experiences with transsexual patients. See Am. J. Psychother., 8:219, 1954).
