Cofactors in the Commission of Violent Crimes: A Self-Psychology Examination

Abstract

In many violent crimes a cofactor precipitates or elicits the event. This cofactor is usually a person or persons influencing the perpetrator, who most often is an individual with borderline or narcissistic pathology. The framework of self psychology can explain this process by viewing the cofactor as a selfobject providing partial structure for the damaged self. This partial, but incomplete, structure triggers the emergence of violence as a disintegration product of the self.
