Watchers in the Night: An Anthropological Look at Sleep Disorders

Abstract

The origin of sleep disorders is described from an anthropological point of view. Case studies are used to illustrate three causes of sleep disorders that derive from this theory: (1) failure to maintain a primary relationship, (2) increased vulnerability at night, and (3) failure to separate and individuate. In addition, the observation of higher arousability in poor sleepers is discussed and a case is presented as evidence. Some anthropological speculations are made as to how the two might interrelate.
