Models of the Mind: Their Role in the Clinical Teaching of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Abstract

Psychotherapy trainees often hold implicit models of pathogenesis and cure, which can distort their understanding of a supervisor’s suggestions. We identify two such models, the “passive-learning” model and the “cathartic” model. Recognizing such models and presenting the alternative model of conflict and compromise formation can be helpful to the learning process.
