The Self-Processing Class and the Psychotherapy Situation: A Comparative Study

Abstract

This paper distinguishes between self-analysis (the classical psychoanalytic approach to the search for deep insight) and self-processing (the equivalent effort as based on principles drawn from the communicative approach). The structure and transactions of the self-processing class are presented in detail. On the basis of this description, the self-processing class is compared to psychotherapy along a number of dimensions. These comparisons lead to a series of fresh insights into how both therapy and the self-processing class acquire their healing capacities. The implications of these new observations are discussed.
