Countertransference Issues in Staff Caregivers Who Work to Rehabilitate Catastrophic-Injury Survivors

Abstract

Countertransference experienced by caregivers who work in rehabilitation of the severely physically disabled is explored. Utilizing a narrow definition of countertransference (= troublesome reactions), two major etiological categories are offered: socially universal and individual. By separating their distressful feelings from counterproductive actions, caregivers may better utilize understanding of their own and their patients’ psychodynamics in developing solutions and management strategies.
