Abstract

It is proposed that hierarchial interactions are governed by a number of biological mechanisms. They bring acute hierarchical encounters to an end and maintain hierarchical stability. Their abenant functioning may contribute to the development of depressive disorder. An understanding of these mechanisms can be helpful in psychotherapy with depressed patients.
