Psychotherapy with HIV-Positive Gay Men: A Psychodynamic Perspective

Abstract

This paper examines psychotherapy with HIV-positive gay men from a psychodynamic perspective. The themes of loss, uncertainty, identity, and meaning are put forward as central in this therapeutic work. A range of interventions (from counseling to dynamically oriented psychotherapy) are discussed in relation to characteristics of the HIV-positive gay men who present for psychological treatment.
