A Post-Training Survey of Community Psychiatrists

Abstract

In 1971 the authors conducted a survey designed to evaluate the impact of postgraduate training at Haryard's Laboratory of Community Psychiatry on the careers of graduates between 1954 and 1970. Of 136 graduates during that period, 107 responded to the survey questionnaire, including 50 psychiatrists, 32 psychologists, and 15 social workers. Analysis of the data showed that the professional activities and work settings of respondents in the three disciplines became more diversified after completion of the training program. The authors discuss the findings, particularly as they relate to community psychiatrists, their implications for future training, and the variables in design and methodology that should be accounted for in a more comprehensive evaluation of such training.
