Screening and Treatment of Tuberculosis in a Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program

Abstract

Methadone maintenance programs are ideal sites for the screening and ongoing treatment of tuberculosis because of their high rate of patient retention and the high incidence of infection with tuberculosis among the patients they treat. In addition to providing methadone and counseling, methadone maintenance programs must be prepared to provide primary care and treatment of the medical complications of intravenous drug use.
At present, shortages of methadone maintenance programs and treatment slots leave tens of thousands of people who desperately need treatment without access to treatment services. Increased funding to expand methadone maintenance programs and improvement of the quality of medical and psychiatric services in those programs are urgently needed.
