Psychiatric Services to a Sustained Social Protest Campaign: An On-Site, Walk-In Clinic at Resurrection City

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The walk-in mental health clinic described here provided brief, supportive treatment for participants in the Poor People's Campaign who were referred by the general medical staff or sought such help on their own. Although the mental health team members were confronted with some disturbing challenges arising from the unique social context in which the clinic operated, they report that the clinical program seemed useful to the campaign and provided a valuable experience for the participating professionals. Included in this report are several recommendations pertaining to the provision of similar services for future social action programs.
