Psychiatric Consultations in a Children's Hospital

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The psychiatric consultations done in a children's hospital over an 11-month period were analyzed. Major reasons for referral included a symptom of unknown etiology (possibly psychosomatic), suspected depression, and behavior problems on the ward. Hysteria was the most common psychiatric disorder found on consultation; one-third of the girls had this diagnosis. The other most frequent diagnoses were hyperactive child syndrome, depression, and organic brain syndrome.
