Abstract

Last fall, the magazine Consultant, published by Smith Kline & French Laboratories and circu lated to 125,450 physicians throughout the country invited Dr. Robert S. Garber to write an article on the importance of the family physician in follow-up care of discharged mental patients. Dr. Garber suggested that instead he devise a questionnaire to determine the opinions general practitioners hold about psychiatry and psychiatrists.

The questionnaire was published in the September 1962 issue of the magazine, and by the end of November 2640 replies had been received. An analysis appears in this month's issue of Consultant.

In Dr. Garber's opinion, however, the answers to two of the questions are of special significance to readers of Mental Hospitals. He has accordingly sent us this paper, with the kind permission of Consultant.
