Puppetry as a Therapeutic Tool for Hospitalized Children

Abstract

Introduction from Dr. Alger: Using puppets in therapy has been of special value for younger children who may have great difficulty in verbalizing or who have undergone traumatizing abuse. The idea of transferring puppetry to video brings many of the advantages of this useful technique within the realm of clinicians who lack the opportunity or facility to work with actual puppets.
Our guest consultants are Susan Linn, Ed.M., a doctoral candidate in counseling psychology and from 1975 to 1982 a puppetry therapist at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston, and William Beardslee, M.D., clinical director of the department of psychiatry at the same center, who supervised the work described here.
The next column will present more detailed reviews of three tapes in the series described below, Asthma, Diabetes, and Death and Loss. Information about purchasing the tapes is available from Family Information Systems, Inc., 69, Clinton Road, Brookline, Massachusetts 02146
