Abstract

Having "multiple personalities" does not always mean one has multiple personality disorder. In some cases, multiple personality disorder is hysterical on feigned, or encouraged by therapists or activist groups. In other cases, it is a manifestation of a personality disorder on another paychiatnic disorder.

Because the mental health professions appear to have no imminent resolution to the issue of whether multiple personality disorder is a valid entity, the mandate is to explore it scientifically, using the most disciplined methods. With awareness that complete objectivity cannot be assumed, the best approach to understanding patient symptoms requires an open-minded acceptance while other possible explanations are considered.
