Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The concept of role is considered to be a focal concept derived in the scientific study of social life to which social scientists and psychiatrists are increasingly turning their attention. A brief review of the development of this concept has been presented and attention called to its possible integrative function in the study of sociological and psychological phenomena. Some implications and applications of role theory are briefly discussed.
