Abstract

In community surveys reviewed in this article, prevalence rates for depression are under one per 1,000 population for depressive psychoses and two or three times that for depressive neuroses. Depressives are regarded in clinical practice as a high-risk group with respect to suicide: in epidemiologic terms there also seems to be a strong association between depression and suicide, leading one to the hypothesis that suicide is the mortality of depressive illness.
