The Metabolism of Dimethoxyphenethylamine, A Compound Found in the Urine of Schizophrenics

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

DMPEA was injected into test rats to determine the pathways of its metabolism and to identify the resultant metabolites and their effects. The substance was absorbed into the liver, spleen, lungs, heart, and brain (minute amounts), and the course of its metabolism and the behavior of its metabolites were followed successfully. By administering the substance and its metabolites to test groups of schizophrenics and normal subjects, it may be possible to determine whether any block in the metabolism of this substance exists in schizophrenic patients.
