Gender Identity Disturbances in Intersexed Patients

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The outward manifestations of gender role may conceal an aberration of gender identity in intersexed patients. The authors present the case of a woman with pseudohermaphroditism whose apparent femininity concealed an ambiguous gender identity. The mother's early uncertainty about the child's sex led to this disorder. Physicians involved in the treatment of intersexed patients should be aware of this kind of problem.
