Psychoanalytic and Cognitive Therapies: A Comparison of Theory and Tactics

Abstract

Tactics developed from analytic or cognitive theories are similar, though differently described. Analytic therapies, derivative from psychoanalysis, are less rigorous in application of active techniques. The therapies differ also in session structure, history taking, dealing with transference and countertransference, and with the paranoid patient. A paradigm is offered regarding reasons for success or limited success with either method.
