Electroconvulsive Treatment—Indications, Benefits, and Limitations

Abstract

Outcome of ECT was examined in relation to identifying data, psychiatric diagnosis, ratings of psychopathology, neuropsychological and EEG findings and ECT parameters. Sixty-three percent of 261 patients were rated as much improved. Response to ECT was significantly related to DSM - III Axis IV and V, history of substance abuse and the BPRS withdrawal-retardation factor.
