Abstract

The author reviews several normative studies of adolescent relationships and finds evidence for a developmentally evolving capacity for intimacy and relatedness. The author advances the concept of stages of Detached Relatedness and Disappointment in Relatedness, corresponding roughly to early adolescence and middle adolescence. Effective psychotherapy must build on these stage-specific capacities for relationship.
