Does Attachment Theory Offer New Resources to the Treatment of Schizoaffective Patients?

Abstract

Attachment Theory brings together biological and psychological foundations of human behavior, and therefore, it could be a useful framework for the understanding and the treatment of schizoaffective patients. Furthermore, the factors that lead to secure attachment between the mother and the infant can be applied to the relationship between the psychotherapist and the patient. Psychotherapy can help the patient to develop new patterns of attachment and new models of relationship, which enhance coping and compliance with treatment. This paper discusses the usefulness of the Attachment Theory for the comprehensive treatment of the schizoaffective patient.
