A Survey of a Boarding-Home Program for Former Mental Patients

Abstract

The author undertook a survey of chronic mental patients who had been placed as guests in approved boarding homes in Saskatchewan. A questionnaire focused on 16 areas of behavior was completed for 161 guests in 69 homes, and the findings were examined to determine their level of functioning and whether it was related to cost of care. The survey found that in general the money paid for care did not adequately reflect the quality or quantity of services given. Results of the questionnaire indicated a need for programs to improve the guests' level of functioning in several areas, including their ability to handle money and make decisions and their participation in community activities.
