Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Despite having an increased risk of experiencing co-occurring mental health conditions, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) face barriers to accessing appropriate mental health care. Challenges individuals face include stigma and exclusion from mainstream mental health services. On a systems level, barriers to appropriate care include insufficient training for mental health providers on how to care for patients with IDD (e.g., on diagnostic overshadowing, how to collaborate with family and caregivers, adapted communication, and managing multiple health issues) and a lack of integration among the various sectors that provide care to these individuals.

This collection highlights patient profiles and health services utilization among individuals with IDDs, existing barriers to care, and best practices and innovation in service delivery for this population. Features of promising initiatives include cross-sector collaboration, streamlined access, outreach, and specialized training. As illustrated in this collection, there is an imperative to build capacity within mental health services and the mental health workforce to provide high-quality care for people with IDDs.
