Fitness-for-duty (FFD) evaluations (FFDEs) have been defined as “comprehensive evaluations designed to determine if an employee is capable of performing the essential functions of his or her job” (Schouten 2012, p. 903). Although any employer may request an FFDE, these assessments commonly involve professionals whose work performance can affect public safety or the employer’s liability (Wettstein 2013), such as physicians (see, e.g., Price and Meyer 2013) and law enforcement officers (see, e.g., Pinals and Price 2013). FFDE evaluees can also include other health care professionals, emergency response personnel, and public transportation professionals.
