I was glad to see the report in the March issue of Psychiatric News about Ramaswamy Viswanathan, MD., Dr.Med.Sc., being elected APA’s next president-elect and Petros Levounis, MD., M.A., ascending to the office of president this month. As members of minoritized communities, their leadership is crucial for the course of APA over the next couple of years. In addition, we are fortunate to have a third leader—APA CEO and Medical Director Saul Levin, M.D., M.P.A.—who has long been a protagonist against discrimination and racism.
History has brought these three leaders to the fore at a time when we need such stalwarts to lead our APA forward to bring justice to patients, staff, and colleagues who are subjected to ongoing repressive, traumatizing, “othering” legislative and regulatory activity that is occurring across the country. We must continue to demonstrate we will not and must not back down in the face of oppression and repression perpetrated by political leaders. We must resist, seek redress, and never retreat. ■
