Preda Appointed Editor in Chief of Psychiatric News

Adrian Preda, M.D., a professor of clinical psychiatry and human behavior at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine, has been named editor in chief of Psychiatric News.

Preda was appointed by the APA Board of Trustees in October after the Search Committee, led by former APA President Steven Sharfstein, M.D., conducted a thorough search for applicants throughout APA and implemented a rigorous review process to evaluate all applicants. Preda succeeds Jeffrey Borenstein, M.D., who has served as editor in chief since 2012.
An academic psychiatrist, Preda attended the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania, and completed his residency at Yale University School of Medicine. He served as chief resident in psychiatry at Yale before taking on several roles with the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas, including medical director of mental health triage. He has been at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine since 2006 and has served in multiple positions at the institution, including director of residency training in psychiatry and vice chair of education in psychiatry and human behavior.
“Throughout my career, I have combined research, education, and clinical work, but I am now at the point at which I want to make an impact on the broader population, and this position with Psychiatric News will provide that opportunity,” Preda said.
Focusing his career on research and academia, Preda has had studies published in numerous journals. He received a NARSAD Young Investigator Award and is currently an associate editor of Frontiers in Psychiatry, Frontiers in Neuroscience, and Frontiers in Neuropsychopharmacology. Further, he is section editor of psychiatry of EBSCO’s DynaMed and associate editor of Cochrane Clinical Answers. He is the editor-in-chief of StatPearls’ Geriatric Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison, and Medical Students Psychiatry. He has also written for Psychology Today and PLOS Mind the Brain. Preda is a faculty member of the Faculty of 1000 and an APA Distinguished Fellow.
An avid reader of Psychiatric News, Preda said he hopes to help the publication broaden its audience. “Psychiatric News can be a resource not just for psychiatrists, but for others who are interested in all aspects of mental health and well-being,” he said, adding that he sees Psychiatric News as a reliable, trustworthy source through which psychiatrists can share their expertise.
Further, Preda emphasized the important role that Psychiatric News plays as the go-to source for APA members to obtain information they need related to the organization, such as continuing education and advocacy efforts.
“Psychiatry is a very exciting field to be in right now,” Preda said. “There are a lot of important education opportunities available related to our field, and Psychiatric News is ideally placed to provide that to APA members and the broader public.” ■
