Early career psychiatrists (ECPs) will find a full schedule of sessions and events of particular interest to them at APA’s 2002 annual meeting. (ECPs are generally considered to be psychiatrists who are in their first seven years after residency or fellowship.)
A special series of leadership and career development sessions will be offered for ECPs. These highly interactive sessions will give detailed information on topics such as effective advocacy, transitions for new ECPs, special issues for IMGs, and the challenges of risk management in a new practice. The schedule for this series is as follows:

• “The Other Side of the Mountain: From Residency to Reality,” led by Stephen Goldfinger, M.D., Deborah Hales, M.D., Mary Kay Smith, M.D., and Ronald Albucher, M.D.; Thursday, May 23, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., room 103a, Convention Center.
• “Career Development and Risk Management,” led by Barry Wall, M.D., Martin Tracy, J.D., Jacqueline Melonas, J.D., and Joseph Schwartz, M.D.; Wednesday, May 22, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Grand Ballroom, Salon I, level 5, Marriott.
In addition, the Caucus of Early Career Psychiatrists will meet on Monday, May 20, at 4 p.m. This is a chance for ECPs to meet and network with each other, share their suggestions and concerns with the APA leadership, and discover opportunities to get further involved with APA on a local or national level.
If you are beginning a career in psychiatry, plan to attend the session “How to Launch a Successful Private Practice” on Tuesday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in Liberty Ballroom C, level 3, Marriott.
In this popular annual all-day workshop, you will learn how to launch a successful private practice while avoiding the pitfalls. Topics will cover marketing, streamlining costs, choosing a location, staffing issues, appointment scheduling and other important aspects of private practice. Information on identifying and avoiding potential practice liability risks will be provided. A session about billing and coding procedures and regulations is also part of the workshop.
