Video Course Teaches Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

APA uses the latest Web and video technology to show psychiatrists how they can improve their psychodynamic psychotherapy skills.
In addition to teaching residency training directors how not to teach psychotherapy, Glen O. Gabbard, M.D., is teaching the “dos” of psychodynamic psychotherapy in a new online video.
The continuing medical education (CME) course titled “Principles of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy” premiered at the annual meeting of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT) in Tucson, Ariz., last month.
“Video is a wonderful way to learn about psychotherapy,” Deborah Hales, M.D., director of APA's Division of Education and Career Development, told meeting attendees. “Nonverbal communication is easy to see in the video clips, and Dr. Gabbard is one of our best-known teachers of psychodynamic psychotherapy.”
The course is divided into three 20-minute segments and addresses various principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy, transference, and countertransference (Psychiatric News, March 18). The price for APA members to view the video is $19 and for nonmembers it is $25.50. Up to 2 Category 1 credits can be earned.
The program consists of a video and audio lecture by Gabbard, illustrated with slides and text, and vignettes of a psychiatrist conducting psychotherapy with a patient. There is also a multiple-choice quiz at the end of the video.
APA provided residents and training directors who attended the AAD-PRT meeting with “view cards” that display the Web site address for the video and a unique code number that enables users to play the video on the Internet for free. The view card permits users to view the video as many times as they wish.
Approximately 4,000 view cards were distributed at the meeting, according to Kristin Moeller, APA's CME program manager.
Psychiatry residency training directors and psychiatry residents who did not attend the AADPRT meeting and would like to obtain a free view card. can contact Moeller at [email protected]
