Real-Time Supervision

The letter by Robert Paul Lieberman, M.D., in the January 6 issue described a teaching model in which the training supervisor was in the room with the patient and trainee during psychotherapy sessions. I couldn't agree more with this model, which is used routinely with trainees at the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu and for years was the standard method with trainees at the University of Rochester.
A complete description of the model is contained in the Clinical Supervision of the Psychiatric Resident by Schuster, Thaler, and Sandt, former professors at Rochester (Bruner/Mazel, 1972).
