Mental Retardation and Comprehensive Training in Psychiatry

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The psychiatric resident can profit from guided experiences in mental retardation as part of the basic curriculum in his preparation for future practice. The symptomatic nature of mental retardation presents some of the most complex and challenging problems in medicine, affords unique opportunities for collaborative efforts with a variety of medical and paramedical diagnostic and treatment specialists, and provides an excellent introduction to comprehensive treatment planning for handicapped and chronically ill individuals in general.
