Positive change in personality function is a process that takes place over time. With their substantial difficulties in relationships, individuals with severe personality disorders need time to gradually develop trust in the therapist and to begin the process of examining their patterns of interaction and of using affect regulation and contextualization in their daily lives. Brief therapy is not appropriate for these tasks. Thanks to Linehan (1993) and her groundbreaking research on the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD), it is now accepted that long-term treatment is necessary for patients with BPD.
