The regulation of medicine is a complex process that must be imposed on the moving target of evolving medical knowledge and practice. State governments regulate the practice of professions that involve public health or safety, but these regulations differ from state to state. Legislators condense a seemingly infinite list of treatment and practical issues into the state’s statutory codes and then must designate systems to monitor and enforce compliance with state code.
