Forensic work in child and adolescent psychiatry tends to have a different thrust from forensic work with adults. In a case involving adults, the psychiatric expert is typically retained by a party to the case (although in court-ordered evaluations, the expert works directly for the court). Therefore, the expert is on one side or the other of an adversarial process. Moreover, the well-being of the evaluee typically is not the court’s prime consideration.
