The consultation psychiatrist is frequently called on to assess patients in medical settings who have primary or secondary hematological disorders. Our review addresses psychiatric issues that are specific to patients who have selected hematological disorders, including iron, B12, or folate deficiency; sickle cell disease; hemophilia; and thalassemia. We discuss the diseases, their unique psychiatric manifestations, and approaches to management. Hematological side effects of psychotropic medications and their drug interactions are also reviewed.
