Empirical outcome research in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy is needed (Gabbard et al. 2002). In this chapter, we review the available evidence for psychodynamic therapy. In the first part, we discuss the procedures of evidence-based medicine and empirically supported treatments. In the second part, we present a review of the available randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses of psychodynamic therapy for specific mental disorders.
