Splitting and Projective Identification among Healthier Individuals

Abstract

Splitting and projective identification are demonstrated among patients with normal and neurotic character structures. The utility of these concepts in once-weekly psychotherapy with healthier individuals is illustrated. These patterns of thinking and experiencing in better-integrated patients are compared and contrasted to similar ones in those with borderline disorders. Historical, as well as theoretical reasons for a delay in recognizing splitting and projective identification among healthier patients are discussed.
