A Nonhospital Alternative to Acute Hospitalization

Abstract

It is possible, then, for a sizable proportion of acutely psychotic and severely depressed persons to be effectively treated in a carefully designed and closely supervised open, nonhospital setting at a greatly reduced cost, and with most of their liberty retained. Essential elements of the program include full-time psychiatric coverage, varied and flexible staff roles, the use of psychoactive medications, and a variety of supports and structures to accommodate the needs of acutely psychotic persons.
