Comprehensive Training in Forensic Psychiatry

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The University of Pennsylvania's program of training in legal psychiatry is presented as a model of an integrated program of training, research, and service. With the establishment of similar programs at various university centers around the country and with the growth and development of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, the subspecialty of forensic or legal psychiatry has taken on a broader role and responsibility. The author stresses the need for formal training in this subspecialty instead of relying, as in the past, on self-training or preceptorships.
