Benefits and Limitations of Neuroleptics—and Other Forms of Treatment—in Schizophrenia

Abstract

The authors review both the limitations and the benefits of neuroleptic drugs. Even though these medications are highly effective for both the acute and maintenance phases of treatment, they are limited by both their side effects and the unfortunate fact that they are by no means a cure. For most schizophrenic patients, neuroleptic medications should be one element of a treatment program that includes psychosocial treatment.
