LENGTH OF HOSPITALIZATION WITH VARIOUS TREATMENTS FOR DEPRESSION

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

The findings show that treatment of neurotic or psychotic depression with tranylcypromine or imipramine results in a shorter hospitalization than treatment with EST. Because we found that the length of hospitalization was approximately equal with either group, our original hypothesis that the hospitalization would be shorter with tranylcypromine than with imipramine was negated. It should be repeated that degress of improvement or efficacy of treatment were not tested other than by assuming that sending the patient home from the hospital meant that a reasonable degree of improvement or recovery from the depression had been attained.
