Basic Psychiatric Literature as Determined from the Recommended Reading Lists of Residency Training Programs

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

Reading lists for psychiatric residents were obtained from 140 three-year training programs and several rank-orders were determined for the 2,800 books on the lists. All rank-orders agreed on the "most recommended" book and the first 18 books; there was a 92 percent correlation through the first 453 books. A brief look at the subject matter of the first 104 books indicates that the most popular subjects are psychoanalytic theories of personality, schizophrenia, psychotherapy, and child psychiatry.
