Nontranssexual Men Who Seek Sex Reassignment

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

Men other than those with true psychosexual inversion (e.g., transvestites, homosexuals, and schizophrenics) may seek sex-reassignment surgery for a variety of reasons related to individual psychopathology. Unlike transsexuals, however, these patients have a deep underlying attachment to their masculinity, and their desire for sex change is transitory. Thus it is important that the psychiatrist allow sufficient time to evaluate the stability of the patient’s desire for surgery.
