Excerpt

Cognitive impairments are common consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in both the early and late postinjury periods (Dikmen et al. 2009). Posttraumatic cognitive impairments contribute to early and late postinjury disability among persons with TBI (Sigurdardottir et al. 2009) and are sources of distress for persons with TBI and their families (Ponsford et al. 2003). The high frequency and important functional consequences of posttraumatic cognitive impairments requires health care providers working with persons with TBI to be familiar with the evaluation and management of these problems.
