Excerpt

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability and death from injury in the United States, affecting all ages, ethnicities, and incomes (Coronado et al. 2009). TBI has also been referred to as the signature injury of current military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan (Jones et al. 2007). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that TBI affects more than 1.7 million Americans annually (Faul et al. 2010). Mortality across all TBI severities is approximately 3%; however, morbidity is more difficult to ascertain.
