Chapter 9.Interpersonal Problems
Sections
Excerpt
Interpersonal relationships are difficult to develop, manage, and sustain for most people. For those who must battle a chronic psychiatric illness, the challenges are greater. This chapter discusses the interpersonal issues faced by people with severe or chronic depression; bipolar disorder; and schizophrenia and gives suggestions for helping patients cope with these types of problems. Because the focus of this book is on individual CBT, not marital or family CBT, we do not describe methods for conjoint therapy. The reader is referred to excellent books on marital and family CBT for guidelines on how to implement these types of therapies (Baucom and Epstein 1990; Beck 1988; Dattilio and Padesky 1990; Epstein and Baucom 2002; Epstein et al. 1988).
